NALIS AWARDS TWENTY-TWO DISTANCE LEARNING SCHOLARSHIPS
Twenty-two employees of the National Library and Information System Authority (NALIS) have been awarded online distance learning scholarships to pursue studies in Library and Information Science at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels at Aberystwyth University, Wales and Syracuse University, New York, commencing 2010.
Undergraduate scholarships have been awarded to Kimnath Ramlochan, Savitree Sookram, Jennel Alexander, Ginelle Francois, Sharda B. Kissoon, Nicole Martin, Beverly Dassayne, Sushma Mungroo-Bahaw, Gillian Ballah, Azard Mohammed, Angel Peters-Leonce, Monique Heywood, Kazim Ali, Rena Ramnath-Ramjattan, Marsha Joshua, Michelle Gopaul and Vanita Harry. Post graduate scholarships were awarded to Beverly Ann Williams, Sandy Lall, Sheena Dalip-Mungroo, Nazeema Mohammed and Harnarine Bhagwandeen.
The Syracuse and Aberystwyth are considered prestigious schools offering the on-line degrees in the area of Library and Information Science. The scholarships will cover the cost of tuition, books and travel to the universities for the study school once a year. The programme’s duration is three years for undergraduates and one year to eighteen months for post graduates.
Eighteen distance learning scholarships were awarded in 2009. The granting of the scholarships is part of NALIS’ thrust to deliver professional information service to every citizen of Trinidad and Tobago. The library and information professional is the leader in the information movement and is a key component in the information-seeking/information providing chain.
The award of these scholarships is in an effort to fill the number of vacancies for professional librarians that currently exist in NALIS.
